I’ve been working on a project at work to model carbon sequestration in forests. The July issue of Remote Sensing of Environment has a paper that came out of this, titled A framework for simulating map error in ecosystem models. Although the method described is nice and simple, writing the code for some of the earlier ideas did increase the number of gray hairs on my head. But it’s done now!

Well, that part of it, anyway. We still have a lot of work to do before we’re done with this nationwide project.

So, I’m writing a book on geoprocessing with Python using open source libraries, and the early access version is available! I’m still kind of in shock. That it’s being sold, and that I’m writing it, both. I never thought of myself as a writer, and I still don’t, which is obvious from my apparent inability to blog. In fact, I really wanted my Master’s thesis to be the shortest one in the history of the department, but my committee didn’t go for that idea. Did you know that the landmark paper from Watson ...

Either way, here I am. I’ve tried to keep a blog before, but only posted something about once every six months. Hopefully this will be a better effort.

I’ll be talking mostly about Python programming for GIS, but I’m sure other things will slip in now and then, because there are plenty of other interesting things out there!
